Abstract
The textile industry in Indonesia produces a lot of liquid waste containing dyes, one of which is Congo Red. Congo Red dye is toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic which can pollute the environment. This research was conducted to synthesize MnFe2O4 with the addition of Moringa leaf extract as a capping agent using the green synthesis method used for photocatalytic degradation of Congo Red dye. MnFe2O4 was characterized using XRD, SEM-EDX, VSM, UV-VIS DRS, and FTIR. Photocatalytic degradation variables include the effect of pH, concentration, and irradiation time. The XRD diffractogram of MnFe2O4 showed an average crystal size of 16.5 nm. SEM-EDX results obtained morphology in the form of irregular particle size with constituent elements consisting of Mn (22.41%), Fe (44.81%), and O (21.44%). VSM characterization results show the saturation magnetization value of MnFe2O4 of 19.52 emu/g. The band gap value from UV-VIS DRS results is 1.66 eV. The FTIR spectrum of MnFe2O4 shows the presence of Mn-O, Fe-O, C-O, C=C, and O-H functional groups. MnFe2O4 has a pHpzc at pH 7.43. The best condition of photocatalytic degradation of Congo Red dye to the effect of pH 3, dye concentration of 75 mg/L, and irradiation time for 105 minutes obtained a percentage of degradation of 96.92%. The test results using TOC Analyzer showed that MnFe2O4 successfully degraded with a percentage of carbon reduction of 78.94%. The results showed that MnFe2O4 was able to degrade Congo Red dye.
