Abstract

Background: Dental anxiety is a form of anxiety experienced by individuals that can also restrain the performance dental care by dentists. One of the therapy that could be convenient to recover the anxiety is a “dentist game” with role-play using doll therapy method. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of role-play therapy using dolls on children aged 6-8 years old that experienced dental anxiety before dental fillings treatment at Pembina Public Health Center Palembang. Method: Quasi- experimental research with a pre-test and post-test control group research design. The subject of the study was 32 patients aged 6-8 years old who would undergo dental fillings at Pembina Public Health Center Palembang which were divided into two groups, 16 children in the treatment group (playing therapy by using doll) and 16 children in the control group (playing by using a mobile game application. Anxiety level was measured using a Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) questionnaire. Anxiety measurement is done before and after the playing therapy. The data analysis using paired t test applied was paired t- test and unpaired t-test. Results: The results of paired t-test giving playing therapy of role-play using doll and using a handphone application significantly influence anxiety in patients aged 6-8 years old before dental fillings (p <0.05). The unpaired t-test results were significant differences between the playing therapy groups of role-play using dolls and using a handphone game application for anxiety in patients aged 6-8 years old before dental fillings (p <0.05). Conclusion: Playing therapy of role-play using doll was significantly more effective in reducing anxiety in patients aged 6-8 years old before the dental filling treatment compared to using a handphone application.
