Abstract

NUTRITION MAGISTER PROGRAM OF PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCE FACULTY OF PUBLIC HEALTH SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY Scientific papers in the form of thesis March, 20 2023 Uthu Dwifitri; Supervised by M. Zulkarnain and Rostika Flora The Correlation between Protein Intake and Total Protein Levels with The Incidence of Chronic Energy Deficiency in Pregnant Women in Seluma Regency xv + 80 pages, 3 pictures 24 tables, 5 attachments ABSTRACT Background: The prevalence of chronic energy deficiency (CED) in pregnant women in Indonesia is still high. Seluma is a regency in Bengkulu Province which has the highest prevalence of CED (23.75%). The impact of CED on children who are born can disrupt physical, brain & metabolic growth which causes non-communicable diseases in adulthood. Adequacy of protein is very important during the gestation period & decreased total protein levels can be detected in conditions of malnutrition. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between protein intake, total protein levels, & the incidence of CED in pregnant women in Seluma Regency. Method: This study is a cross-sectional with 107 pregnant women as samples selected by random sampling. Protein intake was obtained by food recall 3x24 hours and was calculated using nutri survey. Total protein levels were obtained by examining blood serum (20 µl) using the Biuret method. The nutritional status was based on CED & non-CED categories. Data were analyzed by frequency distribution, Chi-Square, Mann-Whitney & logistic regression test. Results: There were 33.6% of pregnant women with CED, 3rd TM was higher than 2nd TM. There were 87.9% of them had inadequate protein intake, 3rd TM was higher than 2nd TM. There were 97.2% of them had low total protein levels, 3rd TM was higher than 2nd TM. The mean protein intake of 2nd TM was higher than 3rd TM. The mean total protein levels of 3rd TM was higher than 2nd TM. There were 32.9% of them with low protein intake and CED, and 34.6% with low total protein levels and CED. There was correlation between protein intake and total protein levels (p<0.05). There was no correlation between protein intake and total protein levels with the incidence of CED (p>0.05). Conclusion: Protein intake of pregnant women in the 3rd TM was lower than in the 2nd TM & the total protein levels in the 3rd TM was higher than in the 2nd TM, but there was no sginificant correlation between protein intake & total protein levels with the incidence of CED. More comprehensive study is needed to determine the factors that influence the incidence of CED. Keyword : protein intake; total protein levels; pregnant women; CED Reference : 136 (2001-2022)
