Abstract

The identity possessed by trans women groups is considered as one form of deviation by many societal groups, making this group vulnerable to various forms of discrimination. In the face of such conditions, trans women must be able to adapt within a structurally oppressive society by practicing certain communication styles, to maintain their social existence. Based on the identified issue, this research aimed to explore the communication orientations of trans women in Jakarta towards discrimination from the dominant groups. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological strategy, this study was supported by the co-cultural theory proposed by Mark Orbe (1997). Data was collected from in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation/literature study. The results of this study showed that the communication orientations adopted by the trans woman group when facing discrimination from the dominant groups were assertive accommodation and non-assertive separation, with assertive accommodation being the most frequently chosen communication orientation. Assertive accommodation was practiced by the trans women through three methods, namely utilizing liaison, communicating self, and educating others. On the other hand, non-assertive separation was achieved through the practice of avoiding.
