Abstract

This research focuses on discussing the phenomena on students in Pangkalan Benteng Village, Talang Kelapa District, Banyuasin Regency who carry out online slot gambling activities. The purpose of the study is to analyze and understand the motives behind students and the meaning of online slot gambling carried out by students. The research method used is qualitative with a phenomenological research strategy. This study uses the Phenomenological theory of Alfred Schutz. Data were obtained from 7 informants through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation and literature study. The results of the study showed that the actions of students who play online slot gambling are due to motives "because motive" consisting of economic factors (wanting to get money instantly), friendship environment (familiar with online slot gambling), and influenced by social media (tempted by the promised winnings in advertisements) and students have a goal motive "in order to motive" which consists of personal goal motives that are to want to get extra money, to buy needs, and for personal satisfaction of students. Students interpret online slot gambling with their personal understanding, that is, they consider it the same as playing online games in general which are entertaining and fill empty time.
