Abstract

Background: Microleakage is a factor that influences the success of the restoration. Bulkfilled composite has the ability to fill the cavity up to 4 mm of depth and has a lower microleakage value. Determining the right color for conventional resin is quite challenging for clinicians and it takes quite a while. Universal single shade was introduced as a new material that can be able to match the color of the surrounding teeth and has a low microleakage value. Objective: To compared the microleakage between universal single shade and bulkfilled composite resin in class V restoration. Method: This quasi-experimental study used 20 upper premolars divided into two groups and the class V cavity with a 3x3x3 mm size was prepared. Group A filled with universal single shade composite and group B filled with bulkfilled composite. The sample was put into an incubator at 37°C for 24 hours, then put into manual thermocycling processed at 5°C and 55°C for 100x. Teeth submerged in methylene blue for 24 hours. The sample was cut by separating disc and microleakage graded under a stereomicroscope with 40x magnification. Result: An average grade of 4.90 for universal single shade resin composite microleakage and 3.90 for bulkfilled composite resin. Data was analyzed by Mann Whitney that showed significant difference between the two groups (p<0,05). Conclusion: Universal single shade composite resin had a higher microleakage compared to bulkfilled composite resin. Keywords: class V cavity, microleakage, bulkfilled composite, universal single shade composite
