Abstract

Synthesis and characterization of Schiff base have been carried out from the reaction of salicylaldehyde and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) using HCl 37% catalyst. 0.495 g (2.5 mmol) DNPH was added to 0.3 mL (2.5 mmol) salicylaldehyde in 50 mL methanol solvent and 1 mL of HCl 37% catalyst was added. The result of the synthesis of Schiff Base is used as a carbonate ion sensor (CO32-) in the solvent acetone. Schiff base characterization of salicylaldehyde-2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (SDPH) was performed using a UV-Vis and FT-IR spectrophotometer. Schiff base was tested solvatochromic using dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol and acetone as solvents. Schiff base selectivity for anions was tested with a variation of 9 anions such as, C2O42-; CO32-; CN-; OH-; I-; Cl-; NO3-; AcO-; SCN- using DMF and acetone. The stability of the interaction between SDPH Schiff base and carbonate anion was checked by the effect of interaction time and the minimum concentration limit of carbonate anion that can be detected by Schiff base. The success of Schiff base synthesis was proven in the UV-Vis spectrum by the appearance of an absorption peak at a wavelength of 394 nm in DMF solvent and 381 nm in acetone solvent which is the result of the -* electronic transition. This is also reinforced by the FT-IR spectrum with the appearance of absorption at wave number 1620 cm-1 on Schiff base solids which indicates the presence of an azomethine group (C=N). Schiff base avoids the presence of carbonate ions in solvent acetone which shows a color change from yellow to red accompanied by a maximum change in wavelength from 381 nm to 472 nm due to the interaction of hydrogen bonds between the amine protons of the azomethine group and carbonate ions. The effective time for the interaction between Schiff's base and carbonate ion is less than 1 minute with a minimum carbonate ion concentration limit of 0.01 M.
