Abstract

The elderly are individuals who have entered the age of 60 and over with reduced physical and intellectual strength. Changes that occur in old age can cause physical, psychological problems and the growth of social conditions which can cause a decline in social roles and also a decline in health which makes it difficult for the elderly so this study aims to provide an overview of the role of social care providers for the elderly in utilizing their free time at Palembang social institution using the theory put forward by Sukadji, which is about useful leisure activities for the elderly including relaxation, entertainment and self-development activities. The type of research used in this research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques with observation, interviews, and documentation. Informants in this study amounted to 5 people as informants. The results showed that the role of caregivers was quite good in terms of the activities provided, namely relaxation activities which included cleaning the bed, caring for plants and watching television. Entertainment activities include healthy walking activities, gymnastic activities, and singing activities. While self-development activities are socialization activities and religious activities. apart from being a driving force for caregiver activities, they have a role as educators, mentors, drivers and givers of direction to increase the participation of all the elderly.
