Abstract

Three-phase induction motor is a mostly used electrical motor in industry. However, induction motors have several disadvatages, such as huge starting current causing voltage drop in a system that will interfere other parts in the system of one particular channel. Induction motors need a starting method, aiming to reduce huge starting current. The starting methods used in this research are direct on line (DOL), star-delta, and Soft Start. The systems are then simulated one by one using ETAP 12.6 software, these starting methods are implemented in a 13,8 kV, 111 A, 2200 kW induction motor with 0.86 power factor used to drive amonia water cooling pump. The simulation results show that Soft Start gives the highest starting current reduced with starting current 406,482 Ampere, starting current with direct on line (DOL) method is 654,678 Ampere, starting current with star - delta method is 512,043 Ampere. Voltage drop with starting direct on line (DOL) method is 14,6%, voltage drop with starting star - delta method is 11,9%, voltage drop with starting star - delta method is 11,9%, voltage drop with starting Soft Start method is 9%.
