Abstract

Puerperal infection is one of the causes of death in postpartum mothers. In women who give birth vaginally, tears in the perineum are the cause of puerperal infections. Care of the perineal wound is very important to prevent puerperal infection. In 2021-2022 there will be an increase in postpartum cases with perineal wound pathology (infection and delay in perineal wound healing) in the Tebing Tinggi Health Center UPTD work area. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and behavior of perineal wound care in postpartum mothers. This research design uses a quantitative descriptive method. The sample in this study was 56 respondents who were taken using a purposive sampling technique in the Tebing Tinggi Health Center UPTD work area. Data collection used instruments in the form of knowledge and behavior questionnaires about perineal wound care. The results showed that most of the respondents were aged 20-35 years (73.2%), almost half had high school education (48.2%), more than half were primiparous parity (57.1%), most were unemployed (62.5%) ), most of them got sources of information from other people (58.9%), almost half had perineal wound healing time of 5-7 days (44.6%), almost half (42.9%) had sufficient knowledge of perineal wound care , almost half (41.1%) had good perineal wound care knowledge, very few (16.1%) had poor perineal wound care knowledge, most (66.1%) had good perineal wound care behavior and almost half (33.9%) had poor perineal wound care behavior. Based on the results of this study, it is highly recommended to increase the knowledge and behavior of perineal wound care in postpartum mothers in order to prevent perineal wound infection.
