Abstract
This study aims to determine the factors of difficulty in reading experienced by grade I students of SD Negeri Karya Mulia. Researchers used descriptive research methods, with a quantitative approach. Data collection techniques are test sheet questions and interviews. The research process begins by giving tests to students, then the researcher conducts interviews with the first grade students of SDN Karya Mulia. After the difficulty aspect is known, then the characteristics of students who have reading difficulties are observed. The results showed that the aspect of the students' highest difficulty in beginning reading was the difficulty in reading meaningless words with a score of 18. The next initial reading difficulty was in the aspects of reading aloud fluency and reading comprehension with a score of 32. Another difficulty experienced by students is difficulty in reading words, which is 39. Then the difficulty in recognizing letters with a score of 57. The last aspect of reading difficulty is the aspect of listening or listening comprehension, which is 82. Characteristics of difficulty in reading the beginning of grade I students at SDN Karya Mulia, namely, difficulty in identifying letters, arranging letters, identifying words, arranging words, mispronouncing letters and words, paying less attention to punctuation marks and having difficulty listening to commands.
