Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the World Bank Group stated that stunting affected 21.3% or 144.0 million children under 5 years globally in 2019. Toddlers are particularly vulnerable to the burden of stunting due to inequality, availability and accessibility of food . The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between household food security and the incidence of stunting in toddlers, especially in Banyuasin Regency. The research design uses a case control study. The population is mothers who have toddlers aged 24-59 months and live in Banyuasin Regency, totaling 38 cases and 76 controls. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. Data collection used the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) questionnaire and 24-Hour Food Recall. The results showed that there was a relationship between household food security and the incidence of stunting in children under five in Banyuasin Regency (p = 0.018; OR: 4.167; 95% CI: 1.331-13.004), there was no relationship between the age of the mother at delivery and the incidence of stunting (p = 1.000; OR: 0.944; 95% CI: 0.416-2.139), there is no relationship between mother's work and stunting (p=0.094; OR: 4.353; 95% CI: 0.760-24.931), there is no relationship between family income and stunting (p = 0.059 ; OR: 6.262; 95% CI: 0.777-50.449), there is no relationship between family expenditure and the incidence of stunting (p=0.575; OR: 0.689; 95% CI: 0.275-1.722), there is a relationship between food intake and the incidence of stunting (p= 0.005; OR: 6.067; 95% CI: 1.702-21.619), there is no relationship between the frequency of going to health facilities because of illness to the incidence of stunting (p=0.107; OR: 6.429; 95% CI: 0.646-64.021). Food-insecure families have a 5.410 times higher chance of experiencing stunting than food-insecure families after controlling for the variables of family income, family expenditure, and food intake. There is a significant relationship between household food security and stunting after controlling for family income, family expenditure and food intake which are confounding variables.
