Abstract

Globalization has triggered the growth of social media, affecting various layers of society, including school adolescents. While social media provides benefits such as communication and education, excessive usage can lead to addiction. At SMA Negeri 1 Kota Jambi, mobile phone usage is permitted for educational purposes; however, this rule also brings negative consequences like social media addiction. This addiction often arises due to a lack of self-control and diminished social interaction in the form of empathy towards others. This research aims to understand the relationship between reduced empathy among students at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Jambi and social media addiction through the moderating variable of personality traits. Data were processed and analyzed using the SmartPls application, involving several stages, such as questionnaire validity testing using convergency validity, calculated using outer loading, and further using discriminant validity employing cross-loading to determine questionnaire validity. Subsequently, reliability testing was conducted using composite reliability based on the Cronbach alpha value. If considered valid and reliable, the next stage involved evaluating the inner model to understand the relationships between constructs, followed by hypothesis determination using path analysis through path coefficients. The study found that variables like Openness, Extraversion, and Neuroticism influence Social Media Addiction. Additionally, the analysis results indicated that factors such as openness, extraversion, and neuroticism do not significantly moderate the relationship between Empathic Concern or Perspective Taking and Social Media Addiction.
