Abstract

This study aims to analyse the use of Facebook social networking as a medium for fulfilling community information needs in Pringsewu Regency. This research uses the uses and gratifications theoretical framework by Katz and Haas to understand the use of the PC_Pringsewu Community Facebook group. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study are: First, the use of the PC_Pringsewu Community Facebook group by people in Pringsewu Regency is driven by the need for information. The group is efficient in providing updates on local news and topics relevant to Pringsewu Regency, allowing the community to understand the condition of the neighbourhood, and ensuring they do not miss information on issues developing in Pringsewu. Secondly, the types of information that most frequently appear and are shared in this group include information around crime, traffic, loss, and entertainment. The group plays a role in raising awareness and alertness to potential dangers and risks of crime, providing traffic information that makes travelling easier, facilitating the sharing of information about lost items or people, and providing entertainment for users. Third, the use of the PC_Pringsewu Community Facebook group fulfils users' needs according to the uses and gratifications theory framework, including cognitive needs (increased knowledge and understanding), affective needs (expression of emotions and social support), social integration needs (social interaction and relationships), and release needs (escape from pressure and seeking entertainment).
