Abstract

The dry season causes rainfed rice farmers to lose their livelihoods, thereby hampering the income of rainfed rice farmers in meeting their daily needs. Thus, rain-fed rice farming families need a strategy to cover the shortfalls caused by the dry season. Therefore, the aim of this research is to determine the socio-economic conditions and situations of families and the livelihood strategies of rainfed rice farming families during the dry season.The research method used was descriptive qualitative and studied using the theory of livelihood strategies from Ian Scoones (1998) so as to produce a picture of the socio-economic conditions and situation of the community in Padang Lengkuas village which is in the middle class, this can be seen from indicators such as education, income, health assistance and house condition.It's just that educational conditions are still inadequate due to lack of facilities and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the livelihood strategy of families of rain-fed rice farmers during the dry season can be identified through intensification in the form of additional types of plants such as vegetables and fruit, for example genjer, kale, sweet potato leaves and kitchen spices, while fruit such as papaya, banana, cassava and sweet potato.Meanwhile, extensification efforts were not carried out by farming families, but the families only depended on the land they owned at that time. Then there is diversification in the form of the wife helping to earn a living and the children helping to help the family economy. Apart from that, the head of the family has a side job, usually as a casual laborer or draftsman. Keywords: Role, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Clean Water
