Abstract

News program is a universal program. Every public and private broadcasting institutions have their own news program. Often news program becomes a featured program for its broadcasting institution. TVRJ of South Sumatra was also favored its news program which was Waria Sums el. This news program was devoted lo the people of South Sumatra for informations on its region. During its course, Waria SumSel was not only competing with other local news programs but also with other national private broadcasters to al/ract the audiences. The light competition urged the Waria SumSel lo make some segment improvements and additions. I n this study, the author used the theory of program Strategic Management by Pringle el al. as the benchmark. There were four stages in this theory namely: 1) Planning programme, 2) Programme Purchase and Production, 3) Execution programme, and 4) Monitoring and Evaluation programme. The type of research in this study was qualitative descriptive research. The research results showed that there was an increase of rating in War/a Sumsel with several changes. These changes were news idea planning, updating of shooting technique, preparation of news production, and the addition of two new segments. The two segments were Positive Sumsel which containing unique n ews and creativity of South Sumatran people, and Short Film which featuring s hort film footages by South Sumatran filmmakers.
