Abstract

Feed is one of the main factors in the success of livestock farming. The availability of feed, especially forage, is greatly determined by land use. However, currently, the limited land area due to land conversion has resulted in insufficient sustainable forage production for animal feed. Therefore, to overcome this problem, an innovation is carried out in utilizing swamp forage by using silage preservation technology with the addition of a protein source to complement the nutritional value. Silage is made using Hymenachne acutigluma combined with Indigofera to produce silage with high nutritional content. This study aims to determine the effect of Hymenachne acutigluma silage combined with Indigofera on N-ammonia (N-NH3) concentration, total bacteria, and pH in vitro. The research was conducted from August to October 2023 in the Nutrition and Animal Feed Laboratory of the Animal Husbandry Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. This study used an in vitro test with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and four replications, namely A0 = 100% Hymenachne acutigluma, A1 = 90% Hymenachne acutigluma + 10% Indigofera, A2 = 80% Hymenachne acutigluma + 20% Indigofera, and A3 = 70% Hymenachne acutigluma + 30% Indigofera. The results of this research, it was found that the N-Ammonia value and total bacteria had a significant effect, while the pH value had no significant effect with the highest N-Ammonia concentration of 10.07 mM and the highest total rumen bacteria of 18.60 x 1010 CFU/mL with a pH value that was is in the optimal range, namely 6.70. It was concluded that Hymenachne acutigluma silage combined with Indigofera could maintain the pH value and increase the concentration of N-Ammonia and total bacteria.
