Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine students' representational abilities using diagnostic assessments. In the mathematics learning process there needs to be an emphasis on representational abilities. So, it is necessary to have an initial diagnosis to find out the extent of students' representational abilities. This research method is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of 32 class VIII students at SMPN 46 Palembang. The instrument in this research is a diagnostic test instrument to measure representational abilities which consists of 10 summary questions. Indicators in this research include verbal in the form of words or written text, symbolic in the form of mathematical expressions, and visual in the form of images. The results of this research show that the percentage of students in the high category is 9.38%, medium 50%, and low 40.62%. Meanwhile, the highest percentage of mathematical representations appeared in symbolic representations at 50.65%, visual representations at 50.39%, and verbal representations at 23.43%. So, based on the overall score obtained, this research shows that students have low mathematical representation abilities, with an average of 40.
