Abstract

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for newborns, uniquely designed to meet all the energy and nutrient requirements needed during the first 6 months of a baby’s life. Post partum mothers who have no problems can produce around 550- 1000 ml of breast milk every day. The things that can effect breast milk production include nutritional patterns, breast care, baby sucking, sociocultural factor and caused by the lack of stimulation of prolactin and oxytocin hormones which play a very important role in the smooth production of breast milk. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between characteristic, breast care and diversity of food consumption with breast milk production in nursing mothers in Seluma Regency. The method is Quantitative analytic study with a cross sectional design approach conducted at four Puskesmas, namely Puskesmas Talang Tinggi, Puskesmas Masmambang, Puskesmas Rimbo Kedui and Puskesmas Kota Tais with a research sample used as many as 89 breastfeeding mothers with a simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis using SPSS version 20. The results showed that 61% of breastfeeding mothers who had a diversity of food consumption had adequate milk production. This study showed a significant relationship between age and breast milk production (p-value 0.007) and diversity of food consumption with breast milk production (p-value 0.005). Age was the most dominant variable affecting breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers after controlling regarding adequate breast milk production is necessary. Adequate breast milk production can produce quality breast milk needed to help the growth and development of the baby.
