Abstract

Background: Iron is one of the essential micronutrients in breast milk which supports physical growth and baby's neurocognitive. Breast milk mineral concentrate has been affected by iron stores when prepartum and mother's intake every day. When metabolic activity go up at the time of lactation, but the intake is low so that the body will use the iron stores that the longer it will cause anemia. This case may reduce the breast milk micronutrient content. This research has purpose to analyze the associations of iron’s intake and iron serum rate for the breast milk iron rate. Method: The research has been done at 4 public Health Center, Seluma regency, Bengkulu, which used a cross sectional method, 124 respondents of breastfeeding mothers who have kids of the age 0-24 months. The election of respondents used consecutive sampling. Breast milk sampling and blood serum were performed matering iron with the spectrophotometric method. The Iron intake data was using SQ-FFQ questionnaire. Data analysis was using Chi-Square test and multiple logistic regression. Results: The average of iron breast milk: 1.22 mg/L and the average of serum iron rate: 56.08 µg/dl, the average of iron intake 57.17% AKG, serum iron rate with breast milk iron (p-value=0.034, OR=3.28 95% CI: 1.19-9.07)), economic status (p-value= 0.025, OR=0.29, 95%CI:0.107-0.794), parity (p-value= 0.029, OR=4.33, 95% CI:1.24-15.1). Conclusion: Parity is the most dominant variable which take affect for the breast milk iron rate in breastfeeding mother at Seluma Regency. That is so important to educate at the time of pregnancy and breastfeeding that related to arrange the birth, spacing and preventing iron anemia, so that the breast milk mineral concentrate will be maintained in quality and quantity during the kids breastfeeding time.
