Abstract

The increasing demand for local breed chicken causes farmers to need to increase the productivity of local breed chickens. A method that can be used to increase the productivity of local breed chickens is using an acidifier. Acidifier is a feed additive that can control the microflora in the digestive tract. Acidifiers help increase nutrient absorption through the mechanism of regulating microbial balance in the digestive tract. One type of acid that can be used as an acidifier is asam kandis. Asam kandis contains organic acids in the form of hydroxycitric acid which allows for better digestibility. This research aims to determine the effect of giving asam kandis extract in drinking water on the digestibility of local breed chickens. This research was carried out in August – October 2023, in the Laboratory and Poultry Cage of the Animal Husbandry Study Program, Department of Animal Technology and Industry, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The research design used in this study was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 6 replications, each experimental cage unit consisting of 2 local breed chickens. The treatments used were P0 (control treatment without acidifier), P1 (kandis acid solution with pH 2.4), P2 (kandis acid solution with pH 3.4) and P3 (kandis acid solution with pH 4.4). The variables observed were feed consumption, dry matter digestibility (DMD) and organic matter digestibility (OMD). The data were analyzed using ANOVA and if it showed significant differences, it was continued with the Duncan test. Giving asam kandis extract for drinking water had a significant effect (P<0,05) on dry matter digestibility of 73.39-75.02% and organic matter digestibility of 73.63-75.12%, but was not able to reduce feed intake significantly. Giving asam kandis extract with a pH of 3.4 to drinking water provides optimal results for dry matter digestibility and organic matter digestibility to local breed chickens.
