Abstract
The research was conducted /rom June to November 2009 a t Agricultural Engineering Workshop, Agricultural Technology Department./ • Facufty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya. The research objective was to determine the efTect of material quantity as well as input and outpiit cross sectional areas of airflow on water evaporation rate and energy consumplion. This research used Randomized Block Design that consisted of two factors which was blocked into three blocks for each treatment. The iirst /actor was material quantity (3 kg, 5 kg, and 7 kg) and the second factor was ratio of input and output cross sectional areas of airflow (1:1 ; 1:2 ; and 2:1). The observed parameters were water evaporation rate, evaporated water, and energy consumption. The results showed that the lowest water evaporation rate was found in J 2^ v treatment (material quantity of 5 kg and input/output ratio of 1:1) with magnitude 6.5S g.h1 and the highest one was J2P2 (material quantity of 5 kg and input/output ratio of 1:2) with magnitude 7.84 g.h'1. The weight of evaporated water was in the range from 79.013 g to 94.183 g and the lowest one was found in J2P1 treatment and the highest one was found in J2P2 treatment. Velocity of air ilow and material quantity results in ionger heat transfer with material which produces higher weight of 1 evaporated water. Total energy consumption was 1,015 Watts or 243,600 calory.sec'1 that was determined from total electrical energy used during drying process at temperature and air flow rate 60°C and 3.5 m.sec'1. Total power determined from total energy used during drying process air flow was of 12.18 kWh. The most efficient of energy used was found in P3 treatment that was of 2,708.8 calory.g-1 water.
