Abstract

Marine sponge SBM-074 has potential as an antioxidant, like the other marine sponge species that are starting to be developed as the source of antioxidant utilisation. Based on the spongin and spicules, marine sponge SBM-074 has the same characteristics as marine sponge species from Demospongiae class. This study aims to determine the phytochemicals profile, antioxidant screening, and antioxidant activity of marine sponge SBM-074 extract. Preliminary antioxidant screening was carried out using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) Dot-Blot method, and continued with the antioxidant activity test using DPPH method. The test was conducted by comparing the sample extract with ascorbic acid as a positive control. Marine sponge SBM-074 was extracted with methanol p.a. solvent to obtain extract with yield of 3,4942% and moisture content of 1,48%. The study indicated that the methanol extract of marine sponge SBM-074 contained bioactive compound of alkaloids, triterpenoids, and phenolics. Antioxidant activity screening of marine sponge SBM-074 extract showed yellowish spot with purple background showing positive presence of antioxidant activity. The IC50 value of antioxidant activity test of marine sponge SBM-074 extract and ascorbic acid as positive control were 85,2326 ppm and 0,5908 ppm (p value < 0,05). The IC50 of marine sponge SBM-074 extract was classified as strong, while ascorbic acid was very strong.
