Abstract

Background: An increase in free radicals may occur at the time of pregnancy. If not balanced with enough antioxidants, it may cause the impact on increasing oxidative stress (MDA) levels. The level of oxidative stress in pregnant women is influenced by various factors such as maternal characteristics, nutritional status and weight gain during pregnancy. Objective: This study aims to analyze the association of characteristics, nutritional status and weight gain during pregnancy with oxidative stress levels in pregnant women in Palembang City. Method: This study is a cross-sectional study conducted in Palembang City, with a sample of 75 pregnant women taken by Random Sampling technique. The blood was taken to check the MDA levels and examined using spectrophotometric methods. Nutritional status is measured based on the upper arm circumference length, meanwhile the weight gain is known by comparing pre-pregnancy weight and the current weight. The data characteristics were obtained using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses. Results: The data characteristic showed that 74.7% of mothers had low economic status. The results of measuring oxidative stress levels is found that 49.3% of mothers had high levels of oxidative stress, while the nutritional status measurements is found that 52% of mothers experiencing SEZ and 62.7% with weight gain in the less category. There was a significant association between the economic status with oxidative stress levels (p-value 0.040), nutritional status with oxidative stress levels (p-value 0.049) and weight gain with oxidative stress levels (p-value 0.039). Weight gain is the most dominant variable that associated with the oxidative stress levels after controlled by other variables (OR= 3.571). Conclusion: The dominant factor associated with the oxidative stress levels in pregnant women is weight gain. A normal nutritional status and weight gain during pregnancy can prevent the increase of oxidative stress in pregnancy.
