Abstract

Sunscreen is a cosmetic preparation that contains protective substances against ultraviolet rays. One plants that has potential as a sunscreen is jambu hutan leaves (Syzygium pyrifolium (Blume) DC.) because it contains flavonoids that can work as antioxidants in absorbing UV rays. The study aims to determine the potential of extracts and fractions of jambu hutan leaves as sunscreen cream. Thick extract was obtained by maceration using ethanol 96% and then the determination of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity was obtained with consecutive results of 140 mg GAE/g; 113.33 mg QE/g; and 73.425 µg/mL. The thick extract then subjected to chlorophyll removal by vacuum liquid chromatography to obtain fractions with better color. Two sunscreen preparations were made as F1 (extract) and F2 (fraction) with qualified physical evaluation results based on organoleptic parameters, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesiveness, and washability. Determination of SPF values of 5%, 8%, and 10% concentrations in extracts and fractions was carried out in vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The highest SPF value was obtained at 10% concentration with ultra-protection category (>15) that F1 at 18.37 and F2 at 16.29. The results of the stability test on F1 and F2 were declared stable against changes in temperature (cycling test) characterized by no organoleptic changes and no phase separation and stable against UV exposure (photostability test) with AUCI>0.80 values, on F1 at 0.90 and F2 at 0.82. The results showed that F1 (extract) and F2 (fraction) of jungle guava leaves have the potential as a sunscreen cream preparation.
