Abstract

Lambak fish (Labiobarbus ocellatus, Heckel 1843) is a species of freshwater fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family and is only found in the waters of Sumatra and Malaysia. Knowledge of sexual dimorphism is very important in the study of fish breeding. This research aimed to analyze the sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of L. ocellatus from the Kelekar River, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. The research was conducted at the Basic Fisheries Laboratory, Sriwijaya University in November-December 2023. A total of 72 L. ocellatus samples were used in this study, 52 males (total length: 11.8-17 cm; body weight: 21.1-46.8 g) and 20 female fish (total length: 12-24.1 cm; body weight: 22.3-52.9 g). A total of 13 morphometric characters, 5 meristic characters, and 7 reproductive biology parameters were analyzed. The results showed that there were differences in the morphometric characters of male and female L.ocellatus in terms of body height, the width of the base of the caudal fin, and dorsal slope, but there were no differences in total length, body weight, and meristic characters. The gonadosomatic index of male fish ranges from 0.57- 2.69% while that of females is 1.25-6.33%. The hepatosomatic index of male fish ranges from 0.68-1.34% while that of females is 0.67-1.38%. Male: female sex ratio (2.6:1), egg diameter ranges from 0.80-1.72 mm. The length-weight relationship for male fish is negative allometric (W = 4.365L0.348 , R 2 = 0.858) and female fish are also negative allometric (W = 5.136L0.299 , R 2 = 0.7836) where length growth is faster than weight.
