Abstract
This research aims to design a water hyacinth chopping machine using the working principle of a piston on a combustion engine. This research was carried out in three stages, namely designing, manufacturing and assembling tools, and machine testing. This research carried out one repetition of the experiment on one material in the form of water hyacinth to determine the success of chopping. The observation parameters observed in this research were the effective capacity of the machine (kg/hour), the chopping yield, the calculation of electrical energy consumption and the operational costs of the chopping machine. The results of this research show that the effective working capacity of the machine for water hyacinth is 23.30 kg/hour. The enumeration yield value for water hyacinth plants is 75%. The remaining 25% of the chopped material is made up of water hyacinth that was scattered in the chopping area as well as remaining material that was not completely chopped. The electrical energy consumption in the design of the water hyacinth chopper machine uses the working principle of a combustion motor, namely 663.04 kWH. The operational calculation cost of the chopping machine in the design of the water hyacinth chopper using the working principle of a piston on a combustion motor is IDR 1,282,402.
