Abstract

Gargled with a solution of extract bay leaf (Eugenia polyantha wight) 10% concentration is herbal ingredients and the medicinal plants that has benefits to oral health . The main component and active ingredients in bay leaf were tannin and flavonoid. It was trusted that can decrease a dental plaque because it has an antibacterial substance. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of gargled with a Solution of bay leaf extract to dental plaque on the child at As Syifa orphanage in Palembang. This research was conducted by pseudo-experimental method using pretest-posttest design with a control group. Fifty respondent were divided into two groups, group 1 was gargled with a solution of bay leaf (Eugenia polyantha wight) with 10% extract and group 2 was gargled with Aquadest.Plaque was measured by using modification plaque index Gilmore Glickman's Turesky plaque from the Quigley Hein, before and after gargling. The obtained data were analyzed using t-dependent test for paired data and t-independent test for unpaired tests. The obtained data were shown that plaque score between after gargled with a solution of bay leaf extract 10% concentration and aquadest has a significant difference with the value of p = 0.00 (p <0.05). This experimental data were concluded that gargled with 10% bay leaf extract can be decreased a dental plaque score in 9-12-year-old children at the orphanage.
