Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the influence of various concentration of liquid waste on growth of C. pyrenoidosa and Nannochloropsis sp. and to know the difference cell characteristics of C. pyrenoidosa and Nannochloropsis sp. affected by various total nitrogen concentration of liquid waste. This research has been done from June to August 2011 at Aquaculture Laboratory, Agriculture Faculty, Bioprocess Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering and Histology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. The method of was designed according to Factorial Completely Randomize Design (FCRD) with two treatment factors. The first factor was total nitrogen concentration, namely Lo = without liquid waste addition, Lj = addition of liquid waste equivalent to 1 ppm total nitrogen, L2 = 10 ppm, L3 = 100 ppm, L4 = 1000 ppm. Second factor was species of microalgae, namely C. pyrenoidosa and Nannochloropsis sp. Water quality measurement results show that pH in research media is still in the tolerance range for microalgae growth (pH range 7-9), ammonia concentration in the media is still able to support the survival and growth of microalgae. At a concentration equivalent to 1000 ppm total nitrogen, microalgae cell density decreased.
