Abstract

The production of java combtail fish fry is still depended on nature, therefore it is necessary to carry out semi nature breeding. pH is one of the factors that play an important role in hatching. pH affects the activity of the enzyme chorionase to soften the chorion, so that the egg shell becomes thin. This research aimed to determine the best pH in the media for hatching java combtail. This research was carried out at the Laboratory of Basic Fisheries and Laboratory of Microbiology and Biotechnology of Fishery Products, Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University in December 2023-January 2024. This research used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The pH treatments at hatching were: pH 4 ±0.3 (P1), pH 5 ±0.3 (P2), pH 6 ±0.3 (P3), pH 7 ±0.3 (P4) and pH 8 ±0.3 (P5). The results of the study showed that different pH media of Java combtail eggs had a significant effect on the percentage of hatching, hatching time, survival of the larvae, absolute in length and absolute weight growth of the larvae, but had no significant effect on the percentage of abnormal larvae. P4 was the best treatment which produces the highest hatching percentage 90.00%, hatching time 27.33 hours, larval survival 96.19%, no abnormalities larvae, absolute length growth of 4.94 mm and the absolute weight growth 0.04 g. Water quality during the research was still within the tolerance range for hatching and rearing of Java combtail larvae.
