Abstract

Libraries play an important role in providing reading and reference resources, especially in educational environments such as universities. At Sriwijaya University, managing the increasingly large book collection requires an effective clustering method so that the collection can be accessed more easily. This research develops a book title clustering method using a combination of Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) and K-Medoids algorithms. AHC forms a cluster hierarchy based on the similarity of book titles, while K-Medoids determines the optimal cluster center, overcoming the weakness of K-Medoids which is sensitive to the selection of the initial center. The results showed that the combination of AHC and K-Medoids resulted in better clustering than K-Medoids alone. The ideal DBI value is close to 0, which indicates better separation between clusters and more separation between clusters. In this study, the lower DBI value in the combination of AHC and K-Medoids is 1,0154 compared to K-Medoids alone 1,0345 indicating that this combination produces more compact and clearly separated clusters, making book collection management more efficient. The Silhouette Index (SI) measures how well the clustered objects are in their corresponding clusters, with values ranging from -1 to +1. The higher SI value in the combination of AHC and K-Medoids is 0,2375 compared to K-Medoids alone 0,2309 indicating that objects in the cluster are more compact and more clearly separated from other clusters, so the combination of AHC and K-Medoids is more effective for improving the efficiency of book collection management in the Library.
