Abstract

Background: Stress is a condition that a person experiences when there is a disequilibrium between the demands received and the ability to cope with them. Stress occurs in everyone regardless of age, occupation, and gender, including medical students. A study of medical school students in the United States found that 57% of students experienced psychological distress and 23% experienced clinical depression. However, stress can be managed through coping mechanisms. Religion and sports have the potential to be an effective and adaptive coping mechanisms. This study aims to determine and understand the implementation of such coping mechanisms in students of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sriwijaya. Methods: This research is a qualitative study. The data was taken with in-depth interview techniques. The informants of this research are the medical students of the Universitas Sriwijaya who use coping mechanisms in the fields of religion and sports. Results: Informants use coping mechanisms in the fields of religion and/or sports with a variety of activities according to personal preferences. The reasons for choosing informants' coping mechanisms are to feel calm, relieved, get new lessons and perspectives, forget the problem, seek pleasure, get a good body shape, and make social interactions. informants overall feel positive feelings after doing coping activities in both the religious and sports fields. There are several factors driving and inhibiting religious and sports coping in student informants. Informants show expectation to external factors, such as facilities that can support the implementation of their coping mechanisms. Conclusion: Informants use coping mechanisms in the fields of religion and/or sports with a variety of activities that are in line with personal preferences in those fields.
