Abstract

Folic acid is vitamin B9 which plays a role in the metabolic system. Folic acid cannot be synthesized and must be obtained from exogenous sources. The previous study has found that cow's milk does have higher levels of folic acid than breast milk, but infants with breast milk have higher levels of folic acid than infants with cow's milk. The aims of this study to determine whether there is a correlation between folic acid levels in breast milk and serum folic acid levels in infants who are exclusively breastfed. This cross-sectional study was carried out in May to June 2024 in Growth and Development Paediatric Clinic in Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Statistics analysis using SPSS Version 25.0. There were 40 pairs of research subjects who met the inclusion criteria. The median breast milk folic acid level was 5.3 (2-9.4) ng/L while the infant serum folic acid level was 3.1 (0.9-14.2) ng/L. Babies aged 3.5 months have higher folic acid [6.7 (+0.1) ng/mL]. There is no difference in infant folic acid levels between the two sexes. Folic acid levels in babies weighing ≥ 6000 grams are higher [4.2 (+3.0) ng/mL]. There was no significant correlation between breast milk folic acid levels and infant serum folic acid (p=0,417). Folic acid levels in breast milk and infant serum tend to be lower compared to previous studies.
