Abstract
Inflammation is the body's protective mechanism against tissue damage caused by physical trauma, chemical irritation, or microbial infection. However, the use of synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs, such as NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), often leads to side effects, including gastrointestinal irritation and impaired kidney function. Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata) is an herbal plant containing andrographolide as its main active compound, which is known to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and various other pharmacological activities. This study aims to evaluate the potential anti-inflammatory activity of ethanol extract from sambiloto herb administered orally. The research includes extract characterization, anti-inflammatory activity testing using albumin-induced inflammation, and comparison with a standard drug. The results indicate that sambiloto extract does not exhibit significant anti-inflammatory potential. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal dosage or to use different test variables to validate sambiloto's potential as an anti-inflammatory agent.
