Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of banking sustainability and bank risk on bank performance in Asian countries. Specifically, it investigates the moderating effect of the business environment on the relationship between banking sustainability and bank risk with bank performance. The research encompasses 132 banks across 21 countries in Asia from 2019 to 2023. The findings reveal that banking sustainability positively influences bank performance as proxied by return on assets, but it does not significantly impact bank performance as proxied by return on equity and Tobin's Q. Conversely, bank risk does not affect return on assets but significantly influences return on equity and Tobin's Q. The business environment is shown to moderate the relationship between banking sustainability and bank performance as proxied by return on assets.
