Abstract

Songket wastewater has properties that are difficult to decompose in the environment so that it can cause pollution to the environment. Songket wastewater discharged directly into the aquatic environment can reduce oxygen concentration and death of organisms in the waters, while if discharged directly into the soil can cause inhibition of shoot and root growth. This causes the need for a good songket wastewater treatment process so as not to cause pollution to the environment. Songket wastewater treatment is carried out by adsorption column method with four test parameters including COD, pH, TSS and color according to textile waste quality standards. The songket wastewater treatment process begins with coagulation-sedimentation as an initial treatment process. The method was able to reduce the four parameters with an optimum dose of 9000 mg alum/L wastewater. The optimum dose was then used for the adsorption process. The adsorption process utilized two adsorbents of activated carbon and zeolite arranged in series and a flow rate comparison was conducted. The best flow rate and adsorbent were selected to determine the percent effectiveness. The percentage effectiveness of COD, pH, TSS and color obtained from the coagulation-sedimentation method was 57.9%; 62.6%; 40% and 97.9%, respectively. The optimum conditions obtained from the adsorption column method at a flow rate of 50 mL/min with two adsorbents of activated carbon and zeolite. The percentage effectiveness of COD, pH, TSS and color obtained from coagulation-sedimentation until the adsorption column method was 78.9%; -6.8%; 76.2% and 26.9%, respectively. Based on this percentage, activated carbon and zeolite are effective in reducing COD and TSS in songket wastewater according to waste quality standards, while the pH and color of the two adsorbents are not effective in achieving textile industry waste quality standards.
