Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a global health issue commonly experienced by pregnant women and can increase the risk of complications such as miscarriage, preterm labor, bleeding, and even maternal and infant mortality. One of the strategies to combat anemia is through dietary interventions by providing iron rich functional foods. This study aims to analyze various dietary interventions to combat anemia in pregnant women in Indonesia. This research employs a systematic review method, identifying studies from databases Pubmed, Ebsco, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect within the 2014-2024 period. The analyzed studies used an experimental design with interventions in the form of functional foods containing iron. Study quality assessment was conducted using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool. The results show that a total of 767 articles were identified, but only six articles met the criteria for further analysis. Based on the study quality assessment, 2 articles were found to have a moderate risk of bias, and 4 articles had a serious risk of bias. These 6 articles revealed various functional food interventions, such as moringa leaf biscuits, orange juice, katuk leaves, red seaweed, soy milk, and steamed tempeh, which had a positive effect on increasing hemoglobin levels with a p-value <0,05. This study concludes that a dietary intervention ricn in iron, combined with Fe tablet supplementation, can be an effective strategy and yield more optimal results in combating anemia in pregnant women compared to Fe tablet supplementation alone.
