Abstract

Silage is one of the technology of feed processing for livestock by fermenting, the goal is to increase the shelf life of forage without reducing the nutritional content of the forage. Total Mixed Ration (TMR) is one of the animal feed processing technologies of silage by combining forage with agricultural by-products in a specific ratio. Research on the physical quality of silage of Total Mixed Ration (TMR) Pakchong Grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv, Thailand) - Pollard with EM4 inoculant was conducted at the Department of Animal Husbandry Technology and Industry, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from August to September 2024. The research was conducted with two treatments with four replications. The treatments observed were Pakchong Grass Silage (P0) and Pakchong Grass TMR Silage plus Pollard (1:1 ratio) (P1) with the observed variables including color, texture, aroma, aroma, acidity and temperature. Data were analyzed using the chi square statistical model and described descriptively. The results of the study showed that the temperature of both control and P1 treatments had a stable temperature. The aroma parameter produced a non-rotten and sour aroma, both in the control and P1 treatments. The color of the control treatment has a normal green or yellowish green color while, in the P1 treatment the color produced is yellow brown or dark green. The texture of the control treatment is rough and easy to separate while in P1 has a texture with a balanced percentage of rough and easy to separate and soft. The degree of acidity (pH) of the control and P1 treatments were 5.6 and 5.5. Mold contamination in the control treatment amounted to 6.75% of the total silage weight and in P1 amounted to 34.4% of the total silage weight. So that the physical quality of silage TMR Pakchong-Pollard grass is not significantly different.
