Abstract

The Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system is a plant cultivation method that relies on the flow of nutrient water that is distributed continuously using an electric pump. However, full dependence on electrical energy to operate the pump for 24 hours is a major obstacle in efficient energy use. Therefore, this study aims to modify the NFT hydroponic system by optimizing the slope of the gutter and the duration of pump operation to reduce electrical energy consumption without disrupting plant growth. This study used the Randomized Block Design Factorial (RAKF) method with observation variables including plant height, number of leaves, leaf width, fresh weight, dry weight, and productivity of pak choy (Brassica rapa L.) plants. Based on the results of the study, the difference in the height of the input and output holes affects the height of the water pool in the hydroponic pipe, which has the potential to affect the absorption of nutrients by plants. With a pump working duration of 10 minutes, a 2-hour break interval per day did not show a significant difference in the growth of pak choy plants such as in the parameters of plant height, number of leaves, leaf width and fresh weight compared to the pump on 24 hours, showing relatively comparable values between the two treatments. The 10-minute system has a much higher energy efficiency (1063.3 grams/kWh) compared to the 24-hour system (115.8 grams/kWh), so it is more energy efficient without sacrificing plant growth and productivity significantly. The results of this study can be recommended for hydroponic farmers because they greatly help energy efficiency without sacrificing plant growth. Keywords: NFT hydroponics, energy consumption, cutter slope, pump duration, pakcoy.
