Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease with an increasing prevalence, including among adolescents. The low level of knowledge of adolescents about diabetes mellitus can increase the risk of disease occurrence from an early age. One of the preventive measures that can be done is through educational game-based health education, such as Three Colors of Life. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of health education using educational game of the Three Colors of Life on increasing adolescents' knowledge about diabetes mellitus. This study used a pre-experimental design with a one group pre-test post-test approach without a control group. A sample size of 35 students of class XI of SMAN 1 Muara Enim was selected using the stratified random sampling method. The intervention was carried out through the Three Colors of Life educational game, which is a modification of the snakes and ladders game. The data collection instrument used was a pre-test and post-test questionnaire, and the collected data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge after the intervention (p-value = 0.000; a <0.05). Before the intervention, 60% of the respondents were in the poor knowledge category, while after the intervention 82.9% of the respondents were classified having good knowledge category. The Three Colors of Life educational game media has proven effective in increasing adolescents' knowledge about diabetes mellitus. The learning method used is in accordance with the characteristics of adolescents' learning styles, creating an active, fun, and effective learning atmosphere. This educational media has the potential to be an alternative strategy in health education to prevent non-communicable diseases in adolescents.
