Abstract
High coal production at PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) has led to an increase in acid mine drainage (AMD) waste that fails to meet quality standards, potentially causing adverse impacts on both the environment and public health in surrounding mining communities. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of quicklime (CaO) and aluminum sulfate (Al₂SO₄) in the neutralization and coagulation processes of AMD. A descriptive-analytic design was employed using a pretest-posttest control group experimental setup. A total of 30 AMD samples were collected—before and after rainfall—using purposive random sampling. Five lime dosages (0.1 g, 0.3 g, 0.5 g, 0.7 g, and 1.0 g) were tested. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using jar tests, and data were analyzed with One-Way ANOVA. The ANOVA results indicated p-values ranging from 0.122 to 0.544 (before rainfall) and from 0.126 to 0.448 (after rainfall), all exceeding α = 0.05, suggesting no significant differences in AMD qualit. However, post hoc tests for TSS and Fe showed significant differences, with p-values of 0.009 and 0.018, respectively. The level of effectiveness was primarily determined based on laboratory results, as statistical tests alone were insufficient to capture the full extent of treatment performance. In conclusion, specific dosages of quicklime and alum were effective in improving AMD quality (pH, TSS, Fe, and Mn) to comply with quality standards. Treatment outcomes were influenced by initial AMD conditions and the adequacy of mixing during jar testing. These findings may be generalized to other mining sites with similar characteristics, provided that AMD conditions are carefully considered to optimize treatment and negative impacts.
