Abstract

Fixed Partial Denture (FPD) is a prostheses cemented to abutment with luting cement permanently, often experiencing retention loss. The selection of cementation materials for FPD significantly influences the success and durability of the prosthesis. Key characteristics such as shear strength (SBS), tensile strength (TBS), compressive strength, and microleakage are evaluated to determine the retention of FPD. The aim of this literature review is to analyze the characteristics of luting cements in determining the ideal cementation materials for FPD. This literature review study with a qualitative analysis using PUBMED, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar data over the past 15 years. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select relevant studies followed by bias assessment using Checklist for Reporting In-vitro Studies (CRIS). This study synthesized twenty one in vitro studies. Sixteen studies reported that resin cement has the highest retention. Ten studies stated that zinc phosphate (ZP), zinc polycarboxylate (ZPC), glass ionomer cement (GIC), and resin cement provide good retention for all-metal FPD. Six studies indicated that resin cement demonstrates good retention for all-ceramic FPD. Four studies reported that resin cement also exhibits good retention for porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) FPD. Resin cement exhibits superior characteristics, making it the ideal cementation material for FPD. ZP, ZPC, and GIC exhibit favorable characteristics performance and are considered ideal luting agents for all-metal FPD. RMGIC exhibits inferior performance in FPD cementation.
