Abstract

This study aims to determine the abundance of microplastics in sediments and water quality at 10 sampling sites, determine the characteristics of shape, color and polymer type as well as the correlation between water quality parameters and the abundance of microplastics in Komering River sediments. The identification of microplastics was carried out based on the shape, color, abundance and correlation between water quality parameters and the abundance of microplastics at 10 sampling sites. Identification of the characteristics of the shape and color of microplastics using a microscope identified the shape of fiber, fragments, film, foam and pellets. While the color of microplastics identified black, blue, green, red yellow, white, and purple. The type of polymer identified using FTIR identified PETE, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS and nylon polymers. The results of microplastic abundance at 10 locations include Jejawi 282 particles / Kg, Kayu Agung 171 particles /Kg, SP Padang 126 particles/Kg, Tanjung Nior 116 particles / Kg, Sungai 2 114 particles/Kg, Batang Hari Buntu 109 particles / Kg, Srinanti 96 particles / Kg, Teloko 74 particles / Kg, Tanjung Ali 35 particles / Kg and Batun 17 particles / Kg with water quality that is still in accordance with the range of water quality standards. The correlation test using SPSS software obtained R2 of 0.927 (0.800-1.000), these results indicate a very high correlation relationship between water quality parameters and microplastic abundance.
