Abstract

Background: Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are ranked as the second most common oral disease. With various types of TDI along with factors contributing to the complexity of its complications, further research into the complications of trauma to periodontal tissue, such as luxation injuries, is essential to determine and evaluate possible long-term complications before deciding on treatment plans and prognosis. Objective: This systematic review aims to identify the complications associated with luxation injuries in permanent teeth and their etiology and treatments. Method: This research is a systematic literature review with qualitative analysis. A search of PubMed was conducted for English literature published from January 1, 2014 to February 17, 2025. The obtained journals will be selected, and then bias analysis and data extraction will be carried out. Results: After screening 668 articles, 4 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The unfavorable outcomes associated with luxation injuries to permanent teeth in general were pulp necrosis (up to 57,4%). The most common etiological factor for injury (up to 44,8%) is fall and accident (up to 37,3%). The common treatments for luxation trauma to permanent teeth were splinting (up to 91,8%) and reposition (up to 53,84%). Conclusion: Fall and accident is the most common cause of TDI. Pulp necrosis due to trauma is a prevalent complication observed following luxations in permanent teeth. The commonly selected treatments for luxation trauma to permanent teeth are splinting followed by reposition.
