Abstract
Adolescents are a vulnerable age group when it comes to various nutritional issues, including malnutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies. One factor influencing adolescents' nutritional status is their dietary patterns, particularly their consumption of fast food, which is becoming increasingly popular among this age group. Fast food is high in fat, calories, and sugar, while being low in fibre and vitamins. Adolescents' knowledge about the impact of fast food consumption is crucial for preventing obesity, which can lead to various chronic diseases. This study aims to investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and knowledge about fast food with the nutritional status of adolescents at State Senior High School 19 in Palembang City. This study uses a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 68 students aged 16–18 years, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and anthropometric measurements, then analysed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test. The results showed that 26.5% of respondents were overweight and 73.5% had normal nutritional status. Additionally, 67.6% of respondents had low knowledge about fast food, while 32.4% had good knowledge. Furthermore, 48.5% of respondents had the habit of frequently consuming fast food, while 51.5% rarely did so. The chi-square test results showed a significant association between fast food knowledge and nutritional status (p = 0.038), as well as an association between fast food consumption patterns and nutritional status (p = 0.019). The conclusion of this study is that fast food consumption patterns and related knowledge are associated with the nutritional status of adolescents. It is hoped that students can increase their awareness and choose foods that meet their daily nutritional needs to prevent malnutrition.
