Abstract
Anemia is a medical condition characterized by low hemoglobin levels in the blood, most commonly caused by iron deficiency. Female adolescents are particularly vulnerable to anemia due to increased iron requirements during growth and menstruation. Iron plays a crucial role in hemoglobin synthesis, enzymatic functions, and DNA production, all of which support cellular health and overall nutritional status. This quantitative analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design and purposive sampling to recruit 64 female students at State Junior High School 7 South Bengkulu. Dietary iron intake was assessed via structured food questionnaires, and hemoglobin concentration was measured using a HemoCue photometer. Univariate analysis revealed a mean daily iron intake of 24.8 mg (range: 17.0–29.8 mg) and a mean hemoglobin level of 15.5 g/dL (range: 11.3–18.7 g/dL). Bivariate analysis demonstrated a very strong positive correlation between iron intake and hemoglobin concentration r = 0.790 (p < 0.01). These results indicate that higher dietary iron intake is associated with higher hemoglobin levels among adolescent girls. It is therefore recommended that the school collaborate with local health authorities to sustain the distribution of iron supplementation tablets and to implement targeted nutrition education programs aimed at preventing anemia in this population.
