Abstract

Cancer patients often experience a decrease in appetite due to the disease and side effects of treatment, which leads to poor food acceptance and inadequate nutritional intake. This study aims to determine the factors associated with food acceptance in cancer patients at the Ministry of Health Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. A cross-sectional design was employed, utilizing the Chi-Square test, with 40 respondents. Data were collected through a family support questionnaire, the Comstock form, and a food assessment form. Univariate analysis showed that most cancer patients were over 40 years old (57.5%), with an equal distribution of male and female patients (50%). The majority received chemotherapy through the intravenous route (87.5%), were in the final cycle of chemotherapy (62.5%), had low family support (65%), and had balanced amounts of leftover food (50%). Additionally, 70% of patients rated the food's appearance as attractive, 87.5% reported a varied menu, and 80% liked the taste of the food. Bivariate analysis revealed that only food taste (p-value = 0.003) had a significant relationship with food acceptance in cancer patients. This study concludes that food taste has a significant association with food acceptance among cancer patients, while other factors did not show an important relationship. Further research is needed to identify other factors that may influence food acceptance in cancer patients.
