Abstract

Nomophobia, or excessive anxiety experienced when being away from a smartphone, is increasingly prevalent among students, including nursing students. One internal factor causing this condition is self-control, namely the individual's ability to regulate impulses and behaviors. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of self-control and the incidence of nomophobia among Nursing students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This study used a cross-sectional design, cluster sampling technique, and Spearman Rank correlation analysis. The sample consisted of 82 students aged 17-22 years who used smartphones for more than 4 hours a day. The instruments used were the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) and the 10-item Indonesian version of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS). Frequency distribution results showed that 45 students (54.9%) had a moderate level of self-control, and 44 students (53.7%) had severe nomophobia level. The Spearman Rank test results showed a p-value of 0.061 with a significance level (α) of 0.1, and a correlation value of r -0.208. These results indicate a significant relationship between self-control and nomophobia, with a negative correlation, meaning that the lower the self-control level, the higher the nomophobia level, and vice versa.
