Abstract

Microplastics are plastic particles that have a diameter of less than 5 millimeters, which come from waste generated from anthropogenic activities of society that cause excessive pollution in the ecosystem, one of the waste that is harmful to the environment is plastic. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance and shape and type of microplastics in 3 different types of shrimp from 3 different markets in Palembang City, South Sumatra. Samples of the three types of shrimp purchased as much as 500 grams (1/2 kg) were dissolved using 10% KOH until the entire sample was submerged to separate shrimp particles and microplastics and filtered using seven graded sieve sizes, then analyzed using an Olympus CX33 microscope with 4x10 magnification. All samples contained microplastics with abundances ranging from 0.09-0.20 microplastic particles/500 grams. The most dominant shape and size found was fiber (58%) and size more 1000 micron (20%). Estimated microplastic consumption in shrimp (500 grams) marketed in Palembang City, South Sumatra ranged from 47-100 gr/day.
