Abstract

Background: Remineralization is a process to replace mineral loss from dental hard tissue due to demineralization process. One of the remineralizing agent used frequently is CPP-ACP that can inhibit demineralization and enhance remineralization of tooth structure, beside CPP-ACP there is another agent that can enhance enamel remineralization which is theobromine. Theobromine is the principle xanthine species in cacao beans. Cacao can be developed as a remineralizing agent in cacao paste form. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of CPP-ACP and cacao paste on hardness of enamel surface. Methods: 30 first and second maxillary and mandibular premolars were cut, only the crown was used in the experiment, then divided into five groups. After baseline hardness measurements with Vicker's Hardness Tester, the specimens were demineralized by phosphoric acid for 60 sec. After washing the specimens under distilled water, and then applied with CPP-ACP and cacao paste for 3 minutes. Then they were kept in artificial saliva solution for 24 hours, then after remineralization hardness of enamel surface was measured. Data were analyzed using paired t test, One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD to determine the effect of CPP-ACP and cacao paste on hardness of the enamel surface. Results: The results showed statistically significant differences between baseline and after remineralization. Cacao paste 7,5% had a significant difference in enhance enamel surface hardness compared with cacao paste 2,5% and 5%. but the means difference of those number was not significant when it was compared to CPP-ACP.. Conclusion: Cacao paste 7,5% had similar ability with CPP-ACP to enhance hardness of the enamel surface.
